“Books are in the holy shape. They are silent, and yet they speak directly into the imagination. You can burn them, but they are more powerful than fire.”
-The character Paris from the Apple TV+ Series See
For context, this show is set in a world where the human race has lost its sense of sight. Twin babies are born and they can actually see, and at one point, it is being discussed between their parents, and Paris (pictured above) whether they should allow them to read the long-forgotten, unknown, knowledge contained in books.
Could you picture a world without books? It’s like a world without vision.
My mind thinks of a few things:
The Bible: “For the Word of God, is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” —Hebrews 4:12
God’s Word is the lamp for the path on this journey called life. The Bible holds answers to the complex/fundamental/essential questions of Origin, Purpose, Morality, and Destiny.
The Movie The Book of Eli (This scene in particular): Just as books contain power for good there is equally the threat of its use for evil. There are those who have/would/will use the knowledge/truths in its pages for their own selfish gain, to exploit the weak, to manipulate those who don’t know better, and to twist the truth with lies. You can see it in their exchange:
Eli- Why? Why do you want it?
Carnegie-I grew up with it. I know its power. And if you read it so do you.
The Book Fahrenheit 451: I haven’t read but it is definitely in the queue of future books to read. It’s about a dystopian America where books are not only banned but are sought out and burned. Montag, the “fire-man” responsible for not putting out the fires of the burning books but starting them begins to question the reason for it all. I just found out that there is a live-action movie with Michael B. Jordan from 2018. (Check out the trailer)
The passing down of my mother’s recipes. I’d like to compile my family recipes into a recipe book. If we don’t conserve/preserve the meals that our family legacies, customs, and memories are made of, who will?
We need to strive to conserve the treasures of the past, the curiosities of the present, and the dreams of the future. The generations to come must not be born without access to the vision that the paper lenses give us.
What’s a book that you want to protect for your descendants?
Hi there!
It’s been a while! I feel like I need to re-introduce myself. I’m Reggie and this is A Thought Full Sandwich. I’ve missed writing here. Today, I decided I would write something and stumbled on this half-written post from March! I’ve become increasingly busy over recent months and though I’ve become less motivated to write, I have simultaneously become more inspired. I’ve continued collecting interesting videos, food, and content to share with you all.
Is this a comeback? —I can’t say that I know but I do know I want it to be.
Hope this finds you well,
Reggie
Happy Sandwiches. 🥪 (Feels good to type that.)
